Wakefield Guide:

Wakefield is located in West Yorkshire, England. It contains a blend of everything old and new, with museums, parks, great shopping and entertainment options.

Things to see and do in Wakefield

Visit the National Coal Mining Museum which is towards the west of Yorkshire coalfield at Caphouse Colliery. Mining has been the central activity here for many centuries. This is great location for a day out where it is possible to go 140 metres below the earth’s surface and explore one of the oldest yet functional mines. Not only do you get to look into the working lives of miners throughout the years but also discover the rural setting in which the mine is placed. It is recommended that you wear warm clothes and sensible shoes. There is a play area called ‘Mini Miners’ where those under the age of 5 who cannot participate in the tours can enjoy their time. Book in advance to avoid disappointment and be prepared to spend at least 3 hours of your time here!

An important sight to see in Wakefield is Sandal Castle, which is located to the south of the city centre just by the River Calder. This is where the Battle of Wakefield was fought back in 1460 in relation to the War of the Roses. It was at this event that the Duke of York, known as Richard was killed. The remains of the castle, which dated back to the 13th century, can be seen here. It is possible to get some amazing views of the Calder Valley by climbing to the top of the motte and bailey. Additionally there is a modern visitor centre where you can explore the history of the castle and its owners by means of interactive displays.

If art is of your interest, Wakefield Art Gallery is the place to go, located within the parameters of a beautiful garden and at walking distance from the city centre. Here you can find work by some of the best artists in Britain, in the form of paintings, drawings and sculptures. Some more traditional work can also be seen at the same time with a more historical touch to it and some of it is based around the theme of Yorkshire in its many ways. There are other temporary exhibitions and displays as well as a souvenir counter.

In the centre of the city is Wakefield Cathedral which goes back to Saxon times of the 11th century in the form of a stone structure. The spire of the building is 247 feet which makes it the tallest in all of Yorkshire. Today this is still a popular place of worship and a visitor attraction where the Discovery Tour can be taken with the help of an audio guide to admire the architecture and history of the Cathedral.
